The Art of Screenwriting

Screenwriting is an art. The screenwriters are the true gatekeepers of the Hollywood. They are the ones who create the idea, the ones who understand the story and concept and give it a form. They understand the flow of the story, know the pain of protagonist and his journey and understand what it takes to be the best. In the film industry, the directors and the actors are not the only ones who give light to an idea.

Unlike the book writing, screenwriting is not just about writing. It is about writing in such a way that the director can visualize it and actor can act. Here are some dos and don’t to help you out if you are a budding screenwriter.

Do
  1. Stay within basic script length. The standard script is between 108 – 114 pages.  Even a 122-page screenplay is acceptable, though it is a bit long.
  2. Make sure that your protagonist has a strong point of view. Make the audience see the world through their eyes. They should have a huge range of emotion, actions, and simultaneous reactions.
  3. The characters should be flawed with vivid, endearing, compelling and entertaining characteristics. You need to hook the audience to your character not their looks.
  4. Write subtext about how characters to let the actor and director know what the character is feeling. It will help them portray it to the audience.
  5. Care about your work. If you care, then director and actor will care and this will show in the movie. Best movies come from the excellent scripts. Be passionate.

Don’ts
  1. Don’t write an extra long script. Keep them in the standard length. Once you become the Hollywood’s A-list writer, you can turn in your epics.
  2. Don’t put too many characters. You will take the focus away from the central character. Director, actors, and audience need to connect with the central lead.
  3. Make sure your character monologues do not take the whole page. The monologue should not be more than a half page long. If you have to write a lengthy monologue, add breaks in between with other characters reactions or image motifs.
  4. Do not add camera angles in the script or the stage directions. This is directors work. Focus on the character and script.
